International students stories

Agnieszka Ferensztajn and Jacek Broda from the Faculty of Social Sciences, Adam Mickiewicz University (Poznan, Poland) spent the winter semester at the Faculty of Communication Sciences. We kindly ask them to share with us their Romanian experience as Erasmus students at ”Danubius” University of Galati.
We are students of Cultural Studies at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan (Poland). For winter semester 2010/2011 we came to Romania at Danubius University of Galati for an Erasmus Exchange. Our adventure has begun on the 20th of September when we left Poland to get, after a three-day trip (by four different trains), to Galati.

Our first view of Romania was through the train’s window during the way from Budapest to Cluj-Napoca. We were amazed by the beautiful mountains and the small villages. After few hours in Cluj Napoca we took the train to Iasi and from there to Galati. The thing that impressed us the most was the big help from the strangers who mostly didn’t even speak English but did their best to help us – the situation we remember the best was when a woman that we asked about the address of an estate agency, called her daughter or niece to come because she didn’t speak English. We didn’t get the information anyway but this woman put us in maxi taxi and told the driver where to take us.
When we came to the university, it turned out that we are the only foreign students. We had classes in English, for example the semiotics course which we liked very much as it was more practical class than we have usually at our university. For the other course units, we were provided with bibliography and we had to write essays trying to adapt the topics to the Polish society and culture. One great thing about Erasmus is that it gives you the opportunity to travel. So we decided to take advantage of this, and we visited Romania. Within the university we got to know some friends who also helped us accommodate in the city (thank you Christina and Tiberiu).
As a first place to visit we chose Constanta and Mamaia. We spent there three days and relaxed after a long trip to Romania. We enjoyed empty beaches and fortunately still nice weather. We visited Ovidius Square and the Museum of National History and Archaeology. Although we enjoyed Constanta it didn’t impress us as much as Transylvania, where we went next.
At first we arrived to Brasov which represented the core of the Transylvanian cities for us. We really liked the city and its atmosphere with street bands and interesting architecture. We spent three lovely days and met very friendly people. What we enjoyed the most was visiting the Tampa hill and watching the city from there. Then we went to Sibiu, which is probably our favourite city of all we have seen. As we arrived in the evening, the beautiful lighted Old Market Square with Christmas fair has welcomed us. We were impressed by all three market squares and the great buildings, especially by the church built which reminds of Hagia Sophia. We have also visited Bran and Sighisoara which was pretty cool.
As a last thing we visited Bucharest. We must admit that the Parliament building is impressive from outside as well as from inside. We also liked the old part of the city with historical buildings. Apart from tourist’s attractions we also had fun in one of the best clubs in Bucharest where our friend took us – Club A.
Well, we have had a great time in Romania and we don’t regret our decision about coming here. Before Erasmus we’ve heard some stereotypes about this country, but only one of them turned out to be true – lot of dogs in the streets, but after a while we got used to it so it wasn’t a problem anymore. In the end, we are glad we had an opportunity to get to know Romania and we will try to change Romanian stereotypes in Poland.
